This talk will give a brief overview of the humoral theories which underpin dietary recommendations in the Middle Ages, moving on to the reasons why medieval surgeons might concern themselves with the diet given to their wounded patients. Some surgical ‘case histories’ will be discussed, finishing with the diet given to a patient with a severe abdominal wound in late 14th century London.
