To commemorate the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition at the Nottingham Castle, the Nottingham Society of Artists (NSofA) is holding a special event on Bank Holiday Monday to celebrate the artist and his work. Leonardo: His Drawings, Your Drawings, Our Drawings is an interactive family event that will bring art from members of the public and local artists, together with the work of the great artist.

The event will take place at the society’s Friar Lane gallery between 10am and 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday (29 August). Members of the public will be invited to have a go at drawing a model dressed to reflect one of the sketches in the Leonardo exhibition, or to try to recreate one of his sketches as they are projected onto a large screen. The drawings will then be displayed alongside artwork created by local artists for the event. Entry to the event is free, and a £3 contribution is required for those wishing to participate. All ages and abilities are welcome, and certificates will be given for the best entries. Drawing materials will be provided. Refreshments will be available throughout.

To honour Leonardo’s fascination with machines, sculptures created by members of the NSofA will be on display. Additionally, to tie the historic 15th century artist’s work with the 21st century, visitors will be able to watch a state of the art 3D printer provided by John E Wright create a miniature sculpture. The machine will be start running for a couple of hours at 1pm.

Tristram Aver, Exhibitions Officer at Nottingham Castle Museum said: “We are delighted to see this prominent Nottingham gallery and artist group responding so enthusiastically to the Leonardo exhibition. Their ambitious plans will bring enjoyment to all, and we hope those visiting the Castle will be inspired to create – and display – their own masterpieces in this much loved location on Friar Lane, only a few short yards from our entrance “.

Alan Gardner, Chairman of the NSofA, said “Everyone at the society is really excited about the exhibition at the Castle. It’s inspiring having work from such an influential and highly regarded artist on show just up the road from our gallery, and our event is about allowing that inspiration to stimulate your creativity. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their drawing ability, to what is set to be a really fun day.”

Invitation-only life drawing sessions will be held on the Saturday preceding the event; where members of the society, well-known local artists, and up-and-coming art students will create artwork for the exhibition.

After the event the complete exhibition, including the drawings created by the visitors, will be open for viewing daily until Sunday 4 September. Certificates will be given to the best drawings done by members of the public, with winners announced on Wednesday 31 August.

The exhibition at the Castle features ten Leonardo Da Vinci drawings from the Royal Collection. It is running until Sunday 9 October. Nottingham is privileged to have been chosen as one of four locations the exhibition is travelling to across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
