On Saturday, 20th January, 2018, commencing at 2.00 pm (doors open at 1.30 pm) at Chesterfield Labour Club, Saltergate, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S40 1NF John Halstead will give a talk on the subject of Labour Governments: Economics and Politics – 1929-1931 – MacDonald and Snowden and 2007-2010 – Brown and Darling.
John Halstead is a long-standing Labour Party member who studied economics and politics at the LSE. His tutors included Ralph Turvey and E.J. Mishan (public finance); Ralph Miliband and Bernard Crick (politics). After ten years in central government service, he taught industrial workers – including Derbyshire miners – at the University of Sheffield Extramural Department. He is a Vice-President of the Society for the Study of Labour History. His main publications relate to nineteenth-century radical history in the Huddersfield district.
